Tips for Eating Well Through the Holidays
The holiday season is upon us, so use these tips to stay healthy and strong the whole season long.
Stay hydrated ~ I cannot stress this one enough. Staying hydrated keeps your energy levels stable and may help you eat less. Just have a big glass of water before heading off to the party of the day.
Eat a healthy snack before the party ~ Eat a good source of healthy protein and fat (such as avocado or raw nuts) to help sustain you for a few hours (after drinking your water). Then enjoy small amounts of your favorite foods at the party without going overboard.
Socialize more, eat less ~ The holiday season should be about spending time with your loved ones. Focus on your friends and family and less on eating at the party.
Limit the alcohol (or cut out)~ If you are trying to lose weight, drinking alcohol is your worst enemy as it often leads to over eating. If you want to have a cocktail, have a glass of wine and then replace it with sparkling water and lime or lemon the second time around.
Stay active ~ Kick up your metabolism each day by going to the gym or enjoying a long walk (yes, even in the rain!). Sweating will improve your mood, boost your metabolism and keep you from snacking on cookies all day.
Chill out ~ The Holidays are stressful! Stress increases your cortisol levels, which can make your body to hold onto weight in the waist. Fat accumulates near the stomach because the cells in the stomach are more sensitive to cortisol, and very effective at storing energy. Meditate, take conscious breaths, or take a long walk either before or after a meal.
Make healthier versions of your favorite holiday dishes ~ Providing a healthier version will ensure that you have one item to eat at the party, thus helping you stick to your goals.
By staying healthy through the holidays, you can enjoy the more and start off 2018 ahead of the game.
